I am a fashion and textile designer based in Sydney, Australia. I design and handcraft natural fiber hats and also "ethical" clothing for women and children. I travel a lot, especially in Southeast Asia and Southern Europe. My passion for adornments, clothing, art, design and craftsmanship runs through my family line. As an artist and designer, I also simply feed on everyday life.
What was your last trip?
Currently, I spend the summer in the south of France. I like to follow the sun and luckily my job requires me to go to warm places regularly. Earlier this year, I traveled to Indonesia for some snorkeling before heading to Bali where I was able to admire the magical sunsets and relax in Canggu.
Do you have a secret address to reveal to us?
It's hard, I have a lot... from the little narrow streets of old Delhi where sweet chai are served and vendors sell thousands of different braids and laces in little shops overflowing with stock from the floor to ceiling. I love those dusty shops with their rickety stairs and ceiling fans so low I often have to bend down. This is paradise for a textile designer!
I also love the spectacular waterfalls and natural pools in northern Australia. They are really beautiful secluded places.
What is the secret of a successful vacation for you?
No schedules and no fixed plan. Sleep or wake up early, whatever comes to mind. Lots of sun, the hotter the better! Swim, definitely swim. Massages and meditation while traveling in Southeast Asia. I take my sneakers everywhere I go because one of my favorite things is to run in the heat, especially in less familiar places. It appeals to all the senses.
On vacation, rather idleness or are you on the move?
Freewheeling, nothing is planned.
Rather sea or swimming pool?
Salt rather than chlorine every day! I like a good saltwater pool when I don't have beach access. Surfing beaches in Australia with the sound of crashing waves are instantly filled with tranquility and a sense of well-being. Bali's tropical oasis pools are my favorite, but I also enjoy swimming and boating in the blue waters of the Mediterranean every summer.
The ideal dinner?
Outdoor dining with family and friends. Music, wine, seafood and gourmet salads. At home, a barbecue of steamed fish and vegetables. Finish with a homemade cheesecake and a raspberry coulis.
The aperitif that smells like the holidays?
A Mojito. This is the most refreshing cocktail I have found!
A few Capri hats from my collection, a few bikinis, scarves and a pair of sandals for the day. At night, a little evening dress, pretty wedges and a pair of fun earrings. I leave a lot of room in my suitcase for what I will find on the spot!
What does the holiday smell like?
I completely lost my sense of smell over 20 years ago, so my visual and tactile senses are really tuned in. Looking back, I fondly remember the smell of the sea, freshly baked croissants, my plastic bath toys and my coconut oil sunscreen when we went on a family vacation.
What book to read this summer?
I read several at a time. I am currently immersed in "Fragonard, the love of perfume" after visiting Grasse recently. I can't wait to read "Wild Swans" by Jung Chang. and I am also currently reading essays by Sekala Niskala on religion, rituals and art.
Oohh, that's hard because all of The Nice Fleet's accessories are incredibly chic. I particularly like the ikat pattern of the Java mattress and this round shape that allows me to spend hours on the water.
Where are you going this summer?
In several places in northern Italy and on the French Riviera.
Thank you Lorna!
